The Z5 can capture movie clips in Motion JPEG and lets you zoom in and out during recording, though refocusing is a struggle. We found no noticeable shutter lag, no pincushion distortion, and only the usual amount of barrel distortion. Likewise, the camera's boot-up time was average at 3.3 seconds, though the recycle time was a somewhat slow 4 seconds. The Z5 scored a 1,350 on our resolution test, which is about average for a 5MP camera.

Overall, the image had a nice variety of tones and good contrast.

We didn't notice many artifacts or fringing. Still, the image displayed nice saturation and colors were fairly accurate, though the image was underexposed by a stop to two stops. It wasn't overpowering, but it was more than we like to see.

We were surprised to find that at only ISO 160 there was noticeable colored noise throughout the photo. The strobe provided even coverage for the flash image but could have produced more illumination. The shot was a bit underexposed, but overall the exposure was balanced, so it would probably be easy to correct in an editing program. The image was crisp and sharp, with deep blacks, and we found very little fringing or noticeable aberrations. On our tests, the simulated daylight image showed very little noise, excellent color matching, and very good color saturation. The super macro worked very well, but at the standard macro setting, we had problems focusing in moderate to low light. The standard macro setting lets you use the camera's zoom but doesn't let you get in as close. The super macro setting disengages the zoom setting but lets you get in as close as 0.4 inches from an object to focus. The camera has two macro settings: super macro and standard. We also liked the Z5's macro feature, which lets you focus on small objects at a close range. Both antishake features work exceptionally well in bright and low light. In the Exposure mode, the antishake feature is applied during the exposure and is not viewable on the LCD screen. The Z5 uses two types of image stabilization: In the Display and Exposure mode, the antishake feature is active when you press the shutter partway down and is viewable on the LCD. Antishake technology, a hallmark of the Konica Minolta brand, worked quite well in this camera.
